Dattatreyudu Nori awarded one of India's highest civil honors

Photo of Dr. Dattatreyudu Nori getting a Padma Shri award from Indian President Pranab MukherkeeDr. Dattatreyudu Nori receives his Padma Shri award from Indian President Pranab Mukherkee Dattatreyudu Nori, M.D., professor of clinical radiation oncology, has been awarded the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civil awards.

Indian President Pranab Mukherkee presented the award at a ceremony on April 8.  

Dr. Nori was recognized for his contributions to cancer care and his international reputation as a pioneer and authority in radiation oncology and brachytherapy. He was instrumental in introducing the current techniques and clinical concepts of High Dose Rate Brachytherapy for gynecological, genitourinary, thoracic and head and neck tumors. His research also includes efforts to improve the outcome for patients with prostate cancer, lung cancer, pancreas, breast and other cancers. 

The award also acknowledged his efforts to help start  several cancer centers in India, South America and Israel, including the Indo-American Cancer Institute for Women and Children, a 250-bed cancer and research institute located in Hyderabad, A.P. In addition, Dr. Nori is a Consultant to the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency, advising on the formulation of guidelines for the treatment of cancer in developing countries.
